Residents in Spain in October 2009 made 20.3% more trips

- The domestic trips, which account for 93.8% of the total, rose 21.4% in October, while trips abroad rose 6%, according to advance data.

- In the first ten months of the year have made 149 million trips, up 3.5% over the same period in 2009.

- In July 2009 the residents of Spain made 17.2 million trips, 1.9% less than a year ago.

In October 2009 residents in Spain have made 13.3 million trips, which marked a significant growth of 20.3%, according to the progress of the Survey of Tourist Movements of the Spanish (Familitur) produced by the Institute Tourism Studies, Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade. The Oct. 12 festival, which in 2008 fell on Sunday, coupled with that the month has been very warm in most parts of Spain, explaining the large increases in travel mates and summer vacation.


Most trips (93.8%) are performed within the country, 21.4% more than in 2008, foreign travel have also registered a positive variation of 6%. Significant growth as the autonomous communities of Valencia (58.1%) and Catalonia (48%), which together have been fate of four of every ten trips.

From January to October, residents have not made 149 million trips, up 3.5% over the same period in 2008. In evolutionary terms, both the sender and domestic tourism offer positive numbers, 2.9% and 11.2% respectively.

July final data

In July 2009 the residents of Spain made 17.2 million trips, 1.9% less than a year ago. 92.4% of the trips were made in Spain, 2.6% less than in July 2008. For their part, foreign travel rose 7.7%. About six of every ten trips were made by leisure and half were weekend. Regarding the accommodations, the hotel was used on more trips than last year, while non-hotel accommodations were chosen by 5.2% less travel.

The weekend trips were the most numerous in July (51.3%), but decreased over the same period in 2008.

Those trips were made as a summer holiday accounted for 27.3%, which represented growth of 5.2%.

The car was a month plus transport through majority of travel by residents of Spain, elected in 81.2% of trips, but reduced the figure of 2008 by 2%. With a much lower relative weight, and air travel by bus accounted for 9.1% and 4.8% of trips, respectively. In evolutionary terms, only the bus showed a positive figure (7.8%), air travel dropped by 10.9%.

61.2% of the trips were made for leisure and holidays, 2.5% less than in July 2008. The next most important reason was the visit of relatives or friends (21.2%) also decreased by 4%. On the other hand, business travel and study, overall 16.1% of the total, rose 3.2% and 3.9% respectively.

From January to July, there have been 99 million trips, a figure similar to the same period last year. For destinations, Outbound showed an increase of 8.1%, while the inmate remained virtually constant: -0.6%.

Type of accommodation

In 22.1% of travel October was chosen the hotel accommodation that compared to July 2008 grew by 11.9%.

Moreover, in eight out of ten trips opted not any hotel accommodation, 5.2% less than a year ago. Within this group were noted for their weight housing with relatives or friends and homeownership, although interannual both recorded declines.

State government travel destination

52.1% of the trips went to one of the following communities: Andalusia, Catalonia, Valencia and Castile and Leon.

Andalusia community stands as the first destination of the trips of residents in Spain, about three million trips, down 5.9%. This result is partly due to the slight drop in leisure travel taking place within their own autonomous region.

With 2.4 million trips and a decrease of 1.5% compared to July 2008, Catalonia is in second place. This destination is, the principal, the least suffer the reduced travel of the month, because it increased the number of trips in the community.

The Valencia took third place, receiving 1.9 million trips, 3.9% less than a year ago. This figure was mainly due to the drop in leisure travel and visit family or friends, which together account for nine out of ten trips.

Castilla y León received 1.6 million trips, up 2.3% compared to July 2008. Leisure travel, which represent more than half, fell by 9.3%.
